JO

The jo is one of the most versatile weapons and clearly is derived from any number of simple farming implements. With a height similar to a walking stick, cane, shovel, rake, etc., the techniques can easily be translated into other useful tools found all around us.  Rotating the weapon is a focus of my training and the various laminations are designed to not only look good but also allow you to see the rotation in your own techniques. I make a variety of styles of jo including straight round, straight octagonal, tapered (narrower at each end) and reverse tapered (narrower in the center).

Below are examples of designs I have made in the past. Each of these is a unique, one-of-a-kind piece. Some of these are designs that I may repeat if I find the right wood.
